If dealing with criticism from others is not enough, we often add to the burden by criticising ourselves. This can become such a deep habit that it becomes a default setting in the self. This causes a lot of pain and sorrow.
When you add this to the habit of comparing yourself to others, it results in a negative self-image. So even if you have great qualities and talents you can still have a low opinion of yourself and fall into a cycle of self criticism. By developing self-respect built on the knowledge of who I am, my qualities and values I am able to recognise my patterns of criticism and transform this habit to one that empowers the self.
